What it is

What is SEO?

Copy that speaks directly to readers' desires and dreams will never do so if readers never read it. In 2026, most copy is online. Content may be compelling and arresting, but it will not be read if search engines can't properly read and index it first.

60%

of all web traffic begins with someone Googling something.

Like a librarian looking for books on the queried topic, Google looks up relevant websites via an index. Like a librarian, it then makes judgements based on what it deems most suitable and trustworthy.

Some books in the library could change a reader's life. But they will never do so because the librarian won't find them. She doesn't know they exist. One of these books has treasure on the inside, but it's missing a cover. Another has a misleading title and blurb. The books never get properly indexed, and so they are never found.

Or, perhaps, the librarian finds a book of utmost relevance, but she can't gauge a book without reviews, so she passes it over in favour of an appraised volume.

Websites are the same.

A search engine won't list a website if it can't find it, and it won't rank it if it can't trust it.

Understanding how search engines find and rank pages, and writing pages accordingly, is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A page built for search is much more likely to pop up in a Google search than one that isn't.

Of course, the point is not to satisfy a search engine. It's to reach the person searching, and to hold them once you have. I write copy that does both at once.
